Juanita Peed

Van Wert

Juanita Lee Peed, was born on August 8, 1926 to Don and Jessie (James) Atkinson at Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa. Juanita passed away March 24, 2023 at Clarke County Hospital in Osceola, Iowa at 96 years of age.

Until the age of 11 she lived on four different farms which were all in Osceola. They grew their own food and raised their own animals. For several years they had a dairy farm and they took milk to customers who lived in town. Juanita loved hunting in the woods with her brother, Paul “Billy”, sledding with all the neighborhood kids, skating at their Uncle Dale’s roller rink, and most of all riding her favorite pony, Dimples. Dimples didn’t like to lose so they won a lot of pony races.

At the age of 10, Juanita started working for other people. She helped with household chores and taking care of their kids to earn money for her family. From the age of 12-14, during the summers and on weekends, Juanita moved to Gertie and Ollie Ellis’s house to earn money. They and their daughter Letha became like family to her.

On Juanita’s 16th birthday she was helping cook and pour tea for the threshing crew and there she met Clark William Peed “Bud”. He kept coming back for more and more and more tea so he could talk to her. They were married in Bethany, MO on June 9, 1943 when she was 17 years old. They were blessed with 2 daughters Connie and Carol “Susie”. Juanita had many different jobs over the years. One of her favorites was working at the high school in the lunchroom. She loved spending time with her kids, grandkids, and great grandkids. She was a friend to many.

Juanita was preceded in death by her husband Clark, her youngest daughter Susie, her parents, and her older brother Billy.

She is survived by her daughter, Connie (Rowland) Updike, sister, Betty Richards, “Sister”, Letha (Larry) Nish, granddaughter, Lisa (Mike) Ross, granddaughter, Kelly Howser (Jeff), grandson, Ted Hiracheta, granddaughter, Angel (Rob) Lamb, granddaughter, Nicole (Jason) Chapman, grandson, Justin (Liz) Updike, and many great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.
