County sets max levy hearing

A public hearing for the county’s proposed property tax levy is set for Monday, March 6. The meeting will take place at 10 a.m. at the Clarke County Courthouse in the Board of Supervisors office. The proposed levy is for the 2024 fiscal year.

Proposed percentage changes to the requested tax dollars - general services total is 2.86 percent, and 18.93 percent in requested tax dollars - rural services total. An explanation of increases to the budget are an increase in cost of required programs and to replenish cash reserve.

The tax rates do not include county voted levies, mental health and disabilities services levy, debt service levy and the rates of other local jurisdictions. The board of supervisors cannot adopt a higher tax asking for any of those levies following the public hearing.

The numbers and full language for the proposed property tax levy can be found in the legal section of this paper. The fiscal year 2024 begins July 1, 2023 and ends June 30, 2024. Those with questions should contact Clarke County Auditor Janice White.

After the adoption of the proposed tax levy, the supervisors will hold a public hearing on the proposed county budget.
