Several inches of sloppy mud adorned the streets around the square for a few days and was largely flushed off when the city and the fire department took a fire hose and gave a portion of the four blocks a good bath. The work was planned to resume when the mud thawed out.
The annual January thaw found an unusually large amount of mud on the streets on account of the extremely muddy condition of the unpaved streets and roads. Cars coming in off the country roads naturally brought a considerable amount of mud that dropped off when they were parked here. Country roads were said to be almost impassable.
For three days a heavy fog blanketed the city and dripped from everything. Typical seaside days. It was but a short time until the streets were rivers of liquid mud. Soon the sidewalks were tracked full and then it was carried into the stores. For the first time in several days it froze one night but the weather report called for fair and warmer weather.
