Shirley McClure

Phoenix, AZ

Shirley Dorman McClure, 81, of Phoenix, Arizona passed away peacefully on August 16, 2021 after a year-long struggle with complications from a debilitating stroke in July of 2020. She was born on June 13, 1940, the daughter of Herman and Harriet (Morse) Dorman in Peru, Iowa, a state she loved with ALL her heart.

Shirley followed her passion for adventure by becoming a flight attendant for TWA in 1961. While flying with TWA, she met her soulmate and the love of her life, Eugene McClure, whom she married on June 25, 1973. Shirley retired from TWA in 1974 to pursue yet another adventure - family. Shirley was a dedicated wife, mother, grandmother, PTA parent, friend, competitor, entertainer, traveler, crossword-er, reader, Republican and sports fan.

Eugene introduced her to golf, a sport they played fanatically for over 40 years at Moon Valley Country Club (MVCC) and other courses around the world. Together, they won a Mr. & Mrs. MVCC Club Championship in 1996. Individually, Shirley was a MVCC and a Women’s Golf Association (WGA) Champion four times and a MVCC and WGA Presidents Cup winner two times. Aside from MANY other wins, Shirley was also the President of MVCC and WGA on three separate occasions. You might hazard a guess (no pun intended) that golf was her “other” soulmate.

Throughout her life, she never lost her sense of adventure. Shirley continued to travel and stay connected with friends and family near and far until her stroke in 2020. If you knew Shirley well, you would know that she NEVER met a stranger, especially if they were from Iowa, and she could recount stories and memories long forgotten. Shirley’s endless humor, wit, and zest for life and adventure will always remain in our hearts and memories. She will be missed forever by everyone that had the pleasure of her love and friendship.

Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene McClure, 89 (2012) and followed by her brother Howard, 89 (August 25, 2021). Shirley is survived by her two sisters, Dixie and Carol, and two brothers, Lowell and Jim. Her children, Johnathan (Tiffany, Tanner (Alissa, Maralynn) and Ashleigh) McClure and Samantha (Jason, Ethan) Field. And, through her marriage to Eugene, an extended family that she loved and adored like her own; son Gene (Susan) McClure and daughter-in-law, Barbara (Dick) Stueve, along with five grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
