Chris Dykes

Christopher Eugene Dykes, age 50, of Weldon, Iowa, the son of Dale Eugene and Sally Ann (Downard) Dykes, was born January 20, 1971, in Leon, Iowa. Jesus took him Home on July 16, 2021.

Chris grew up in Van Wert and Leon, Iowa. He attended and graduated from Central Decatur School with the Class of “89”. His senior year the boys’ basketball team went to the state tournament. A proud moment for our small town. He attended Iowa Central Community College in Fort Dodge, Iowa for two years and was on the basketball team there.

Chris had a gift for carpentry and had his own construction business in Des Moines, Iowa for several years. Later he became manager at North Lumber in Leon when his dad started farming. He also helped with the planting and harvesting.

Chris loved fishing, especially fishing with his dad. He went to several walleye tournaments with him. Dale’s passing was hard on him. Chris was able to take family and friends fishing on several occasions in search of the big walleye.

Battling addiction is terrible for the person addicted and terrible for the ones that love them. Chris was loved.

Chris battled cancer for six years. Two stem cell transplants gave him more time, but he suffered. The many times he was hospitalized he had his Bible with him. He said he always believed in the Lord but didn’t have an understanding or relationship with Him till 2005. He was baptized September 21, 2006, in Newton, Iowa.

Chris was preceded in death by his father in 2015; and grandparents, Conda Downard and Bill and Darlene Tiedje.

He leaves behind, his mother, Sally Dykes of Leon, Iowa; brother, Tony and Erin Dykes of Garden Grove, Iowa; grandmother, Donna Fulton of Leon, Iowa; sons, Luke Simmerman and wife, Morgan of Truro, Iowa and Gideon Porter of Garden Grove; daughter, Mesa Dykes of Leon and her sister, River Hamaker, of Leon; granddaughter, Opal Ann Simmerman; niece, Mara Dykes and nephew, Nash Dykes, both of Garden Grove; nephew, Kyle Sherman of Runnells, Iowa; and other relatives and many friends.

Funeral services will be held at the Slade – O’Donnell Funeral Home in Leon, Iowa at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 20, 2021, with Pastor Jeremy Quigley officiating. Burial will be in the Leon Cemetery, Leon, Iowa.
