Woodburn man charged with attempted murder

A 32-year-old Woodburn man has been charged with attempted murder, possession of a firearm by a felon and going armed with intent after an incident on Dec. 5.

According to court documents, at approximately 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 5, Clarke County dispatch was advised of a gunshot victim in rural Clarke County, at 3049 Pacific St. While en route to that location, law enforcement was advised the caller, George William Douglas, had stated he had shot someone.

Douglas was located by law enforcement at 3049 Pacific St., at which time he told law enforcement that he had shot Tyler Sutton in the driveway of Sutton’s residence. Douglas made several statements to officers regarding Sutton having given him bad drugs, and that he had got the firearm from his brother’s residence. He was subsequently arrested.

Officers and EMS arrived at Sutton’s address, 1066 315th Ave., New Virginia, where they found the 35-year-old suffering from a gunshot wound. Sutton was transported via LifeFlight to Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines, where as of Monday was listed in critical condition. The incident occurred approximately five to 15 minutes before Douglas called dispatch.

Douglas appeared in court on Dec. 6 to answer to the charges of attempted murder, going armed with intent and dominion/control of firearm/offensive weapon by felon.

A bond was set or continued at $35,000 - cash only. Douglas requested appointment of counsel, and attorney Erin Carr was appointed to represent Douglas.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 17 at the Clarke County Courthouse.

Possession of a firearm by a felon and armed with intent are Class D felonies. Attempted murder is a Class B felony.

An investigation is ongoing.
