When Darlene Oliver, owner of Darlene’s Variety Store and More, saw a need for people when it came to having a meal to eat, she decided to do something about it.
Once a week, Darlene’s Variety Store and More will be handing out sack lunches to those who stop by to get one.
“We want to give back to the community,” said Oliver of her decision to do this.
The sack lunch consists of a sandwich, bag of chips, a cookie, and a drink. Hormel donated ham for the sandwiches, as well as hot dogs that will be used at a later date. Everyone is welcome to get a sack lunch, or dinner, but they are limited to one person and you must be present to get one.
Oliver said that the day of the sack lunch will vary each week, so it is best to follow the store’s Facebook page for updates. The day of, a post will be made noting how many lunches are available; the aim is to have between 36 and 40. If all of the lunches are not gone by the end of the day, they will be back again the next with a post on Facebook of how many are left
Fundraiser
In addition to the sack lunches, Oliver is also holding a fundraiser in support of two local law enforcement families who have children receiving medical care. The profits from certain products within the store will go towards the families.
“We’re going to run it for a little bit, hopefully get them some money,” said Oliver. “Every little bit helps.”
Darlene’s Variety Store and More is located at 111 East Washington Street in Osceola.
