Three Murray teens killed in a train-truck accident May 27

A fatal accident at the railroad crossing on Kansas Street east of Murray occurred 4 p.m. May 27 involving four Murray teens.

According to an Iowa State Patrol report, Tyson Scott Nall, 16, of Murray was driving a 2000 Chevrolet Silverado east on Kansas Street, a dirt road, and for unknown reasons failed to yield to the train. As the vehicle approached the railroad crossing it began to swerving to the left and entered the railroad crossing just north of the roadway.

Ryan Christopher Lair, 35, of Galesburg, IL, was driving the 2004 GE train pulling 130 cars was traveling northbound on the right rails of a double set of tracks. The train struck the passenger side of the vehicle and pushed the truck along the tracks 1,440 feet before being able to stop completely.

Brooklynn Dawn Eggers, 14, of Murray, had been seated in the back driver’s side and was ejected from the truck and pronounced dead at the scene.

Gavin James Werner, 15, of Murray, had been seated in the front passenger side and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Rylon Todd Cook, 15, of Murray, had been seated in the back passenger side and was transported to a Des Moines hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

The intersection of Kansas Street and the double set of train tracks was marked only by a railroad crossing sign.
