Nearly a dozen Clarke County vendors participated in the Farm Girls Flea Market Saturday

The Farm Girls Flea Market, run by Terry and Becky Waddell and family hosted their second market at Clampitt Hills Farm in Davis City Saturday. Eleven Clarke County vendors were set up in the hay field along with around 80 other vendors from surrounding counties. Nearly 1,300 shoppers came throughout the day.

Osceola and Clarke County vendors included Backdoor Country Crafts, TC Designs, Waugh’s Country Creations, The Harvest Barn, Picture This, Farm Chick Designs, TJC Designs, Southern Point Boutique, Your Sweet Pickin’s Handcrafted Goods, Timber Ridge Country Market and Homestead Fabrication.

“We’re originally from the southeastern Iowa area and these things are all over in that area. My daughter Shanae said, ‘We can do this,’ after some family discussion. We felt like there was a need for small businesses in this area to showcase their artistic ability, their talents and have a venue for that and we have that space here,” said Becky Waddell. “So we hired our Amish neighbor to save my husbands grandpa’s little hay barn that was leaning to the east and missing most of the roof tin. We had the room for people to socially distance and in the middle of a pandemic we felt like we really needed to do what we could to boost the economy in this rural area.”

Vendors sold a multitude of items including home/garden decor, plants, art, furniture and clothing. Shoppers enjoyed watching a woodcarver, live music and snacks from multiple food trucks.

For anyone with children, and many adults too, a highlight of the market was seeing the miniature Highland cattle. Terry and Becky breed the longhaired Scottish cattle and have 15 on their farm. Shoppers were able to feed and pet the cattle.

The market Saturday was the second Farms Girls Flea Market, they held their first one last fall. The bi-annual event will take place again October 2.
