Area cross country roundup: CD impresses in season opener

EDDYVILLE – Central Decatur boys and girls cross country opened the season with team wins and individual wins on each side.

For the boys, Class 2A No. 6 William Gillis and the girls’ leading runner Harrisen Bevan each took first-place finishes. Hadley Bell ran the 11th fastest all time 5k time in school history and finished in second place, along with Tate Swartz for the boys.

“Girls look very dangerous with Harrisen Bevan having such a great summer of training and winning her first race,” Central Decatur head coach Reece Tedford said. “Hadley Bell and Aniston Jones had incredible first HS races as freshman.”

The Cardinals also had finishers rounding out the top-five runners on both sides. Aniston Jones and Chloe Hamaker finished fourth and fifth, respectively, for the girls. Jr Oesch and Tyson McDole finished third and fifth, respectively, for the boys group.

“One through three sweep with William, Tate, and Jr up front made it tough for us to be beat, and we had a state qualifier in 5th with Tyson who may not have had his best race,” Tedford said. “But, from a team standpoint, we know we are very dangerous having a state qualifier finishing as our 4th man.”
