Rollin Daly

Osceola

Rollin Eugene Daly was born April 22, 1929 at his family home in rural Ringgold County, Iowa to parents Clarence and Rosa (Yowell) Daly.  He passed from this life May 9, 2020 at Homestead Assisted Living in Osceola, IA.  Rollin was the youngest of seven children and was the last living survivor of his family.

As was customary during those times, Rollin’s father allowed all of this sons to finish public school through the 8th grade, then expected them to assist him full time on the farm.  Rollin did so until age17, then left the family farm to work at Sargent Brothers limestone quarry near Osceola.  As it turned out, these were the only two jobs he held throughout his lifetime.  He ended up spending 46 years in the quarry business, becoming superintendent of the crushing operation in the late 1960s.  At age 18 he married Dorothy McClarey of Davis City, IA and to that union, one daughter, Sharon, was born.  During the early years of this young family’s life, they resided on the Sargent quarry property, later moving to Osceola where he and Dorothy made a welcoming home for family and friends.

Rollin retired in 1992 and immersed himself in hobbies, including quilt making and woodworking. He also became an avid reader of Louie L’Amour novels, reading literally hundreds, if not thousands of books over the years.  Rollin loved everything that was “cowboy”.

Rollin was well known around town for his whistle, cowboy hat and red suspenders.  A bright smile and gentle manner were an ever-present component of his character. Rollin accepted the Lord into his life in 1970 and immediately devoted himself to His works.  He was baptized and joined the Osceola Church of Christ where he became a pillar of that ministry. Rollin’s faith was solidly built on God’s word alone and he never wavered from it.

Rollin was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Mandy, Irene, Arleta, and brothers Chauncey, Lyle, and Loren. Living in his memory are Dorothy, his wife of 73 years, daughter Sharon and son-in-law David Whittlesey of Woodburn, IA.
