WINTERSET — With a steep step up in competition came the challeneges that Clarke boys track and field coach Duane Matthess was hoping for for his team.

The Indian boys finished 10th among the 14 teams in the field with 15.5 team points. Carlisle won the meet with 118 points.

Clarke posted three individual performances that earned the Indians team points. Humberto Arellano’s 400 meter dash showing was one of the more impressive on the day for Clarke. He took second in the race in a time of 54.87 seconds.

Payton Winship and Brian Avalos both snagged top six spots in the long jump. Winship leaped 19 feet, 4 inches to take third and Avalos jumped 18-9 to tie for sixth.

The Indians’ highest-placing relay race was the 4x100, which blazed to a time of 47.10. Winship, Byron Rivera, Amani Fry and Avalos made up that relay.

Just missing placewinning spots were Riley Domina in seventh in the 400 meter run and Fry in seventh in the 400 meter hurdles.

Clarke’s top throwing performances came from Sam Zaragoza-Rosales, who threw 106-4 in the discus for 18th and 35 feet in the shot put for 16th.
