Clarke picked up a senior night home dual win over Central Decatur 34-30 and fell to Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont 66-18 and Knoxville 54-30 Thursday.
The Indians honored Parker Hardy, Carter Smith, Carter Wilken, and Samuel Zaragoza-Rosales after the Knoxville dual, the first of the night.
There was plenty to celebrate early on, as Hardy worked for a pin early.
Max Maiden and Colby Wilken both worked their ways to pins.
Wilken was 2-1 on the night with a pin and a major decision win.
Maiden sprinted to family in the stands to show off his pin chain after his win by fall in 1:34.
“Max had a good win. Both of his wins were good,” Clarke coach Brian Reece said.
Just as wins will come for some, Reece knows he can measure his wrestler’s growth and effort based on what they’ll demonstrate against obviously superior wrestlers.
He pinpointed Will Smith’s battle for nearly three minutes before being pinned by Central Decatur’s Adam Walker.
“I tell the guys all the time, it’s not about wins and losses, it’s about how you perform to your abilities. Will went out there and was tough,” Reece said.
The 34-30 dual win over Central Decatur was highlighted late in the dual by a major decision victory for Colby Wilken bumped up at 145 over Elliot Ness. Wilken was a brawler with a mission in mind throughout the match.
Central Decatur lost to E-B-F 66-13 and Knoxville 42-36.
The Cardinals picked up three pins from Walker, and a pin each from Luke and Logan Jones, Dakota Davis, Wyatt Dale and Elliot Ness. Dale earned a win by decision in the E-B-F dual and Luke Jones earned a major decision victory against the Rockets as well.
“Both my seniors Wyatt Dale and Luke Jones are stepping up and taking care of the types of tournaments that we’re getting better at and finishing strong,” Central Decatur coach Brian Carson said.
Walker had one of the evening’s best matches, taking a third-period pin in a close match with Knoxville’s Cody Ray Smith.
Coach Brian Carson spoke glowingly of Walker’s gritty performances.
“That is his style,” Carson said. “He is that guy that just keeps coming and coming and coming and he’ll pin you away at the end if he can.”
Now, Reece is looking forward to his experienced juniors and seniors to show what it takes to take what they’ve worked on and discontinue the mistakes that have hurt the team from time to time this season.
The holiday break comes at a good time for the
Indians, who are in need of rest.
Clarke’s wrestling team will get back in action Jan. 6 at the tournament at St. Edmond.
