Chariton bests Clarke at home

It was a tough week for the Clarke girls and boys basketball teams, with two losses on the road and one at home Friday for each.

Friday saw Clarke host the Chariton Chargers in a double-header for the first home game of the season, as all sought to earn their first win of the season, as well as their first conference win.

Girls

An early lead by the Lady Chargers left the Lady Indians struggling to catch up, as Chariton sank 21 points to Clarke’s four in the first quarter, due to defensive pressure and successful three-point shots. The second quarter saw Chariton widen the gap by 16 points going into halftime. Clarke managed to keep Chariton to only a single-score lead in the third, with 11 points to Chariton’s 12, as Clarke began to apply more pressure back to Chariton. The fourth quarter saw Chariton pull ahead again, scoring 20 points to Clarke’s 8.

Maisy McCoy was the high scorer for the game, with 11 of the team’s 32, including one, three-point shot. Reagan Fry followed with 10 points, and a game high of 11 rebounds. Kya Thornton and Emilee Boyd added a three-point shot apiece. McCoy had five steals in the game.

Boys

The boys game started with early scores and fouls on both sides, with an 11-11 score halfway through the first quarter, before Chariton pulled ahead to 25-15 to end the first. A series of rebounds and fouls saw high turnover in the second quarter, with Clarke’s ball refusing to fall in the net. With Chariton at the free throw line to add to the score, the game went into halftime 37-24 in Chariton’s favor.

The Chargers continued to keep the Indians at bay in the third quarter, allowing them only 10 points to their 19, as Clarke tried to chip away at the lead. Clarke ramped into their full-court pressure in the fourth quarter and managed to score one more point than Chariton, but it was not enough for them to overcome the 56-34 lead that preceded them.

The Indians’ high scorer of the game was Peyton Lynn with 12 points, including two, three-point shots. Brock Watson followed with 11 points. Ryan Diehl and Brock Nall had six points each, Denilson Deleon Elias five, Jordyn Deleon Elias and Logan Gracey three, Eli Fry two and Alec Wright one.
