Clarke shuts out Colfax-Mingo

Clarke football stands at 2-0 after their 57-0 win over Colfax-Mingo at home on Sept. 2.

The Indians started out the game against the Tigerhawks with a Jesus Vega touchdown less than four minutes in, followed by an extra point kick by Cristian Espinoza. A pass from quarterback Jack Cooley to receiver Brock Watson earned the Indians another touchdown with 50 seconds left in the first quarter; a kick by Espinoza brought the score to 14-0.

The second quarter started with a Shay Mathews touchdown through the middle of the Tigerhawk’s defense with over 11 minutes left. Espinoza came in to kick for an extra point. Mathews and Vega both put another six points on the board apiece in the quarter with Espinoza putting two more up.

An interception by Watson with about a 1:30 left in the quarter turned possession over to the Indians; a touchdown resulting from the interception was called back because of penalty.

Cooley attempted a pass to Watson in the end zone that was incomplete, but a following pass attempt to Austin Gonseth found its way for another Indian touchdown. A two-point conversion from Cooley to Nate Saucedo put the Indians at 43-0 at halftime.

Neither team managed to put any numbers on the board during the third quarter, and the Indians found another 12 in the fourth quarter, courtesy of a touchdown by Drake Moore and a long run down the side by Saucedo with Espinoza kicking for the extra points.

With 1:28 left in the game, Colfax-Mingo took a knee on reception, followed by two successive knees from their quarterback to end the game.

The Indians face off against the Perry Bluejays (0-2) at home 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 9]. It will be a military appreciation night, and the Pee Wee Cheerleaders will perform at halftime.
