Area girls basketball roundup: Clarke, Murray knocked out of postseason play; CD advances

Exira-EHK 64, Murray 31

ELK HORN – Class 1A No. 4 Exira-Elkhorn Kimbalton girls basketball (22-0) beat Murray (12-10) Tuesday, February 16th in the second round of Class 1A Region 8 play.

The Spartans shot ahead in the first quarter 26-8, going ahead by 18. Murray gained one point in the second to close the halftime score at 33-16, but the Spartans remained to be too much for Murray as they pulled away in the second half.

Leading the way for Murray was Treyn Sheilds with eight points. Jayda Chew and Kinzee Eggers scored six each. Hannah Paschke grabbed seven rebounds.

Macy Emgarten and Quinn Grubbs combined for 49 points, scoring 25 and 24, respectively.

Murray basketball bids farewell to two seniors, Eggers and Megan Keller.

Mount Ayr 40, Central Decatur 28

LEON – Mount Ayr (16-6) and Central Decatur (14-7) went through a low-scoring bout in Class 2A Region 5 play Tuesday, Feb. 16, but CD fell in a 40-28 final.

The Raiderettes led by three through the first quarter, but CD got ahead by two coming out of halftime 22-20.

CD then scored just once in the third quarter and twice in the fourth, combining for six points in the half as Mount Ayr scored 20 in the half.

Lauren Martin led in scoring with seven. Eily Hall scored six and grabbed 11 rebounds

The Cards bid farewell to Lyndsey Dale and Hall, who will graduate in the spring.

Des Moines Christian 63, Clarke 26

URBANDALE – Class 3A No. 7 Des Moines Christian (20-4) rolled through Clarke (6-13) in the Class 3A Region 3 quarterfinal, ending the Lady Indians season in a 63-26 final Feb. 13.

The Lions led by 21 through the first quarter and didn’t look back. Another 20-plus point second quarter pushed DMC ahead as Clarke didn’t score more than nine points in any quarter.

Kaitlyn Halsband scored 12 points, leading the team. Josey Dunbar had a team-high six rebounds.

Clarke bids farewell to four seniors – Halsband, Kiaya Dunbar, Katie Donaldson and Nicole Barnard.

Murray 50, Mormon Trail 44

MURRAY – Murray beat Mormon Trail in the opening round of Class 1A Region 8 play, winning 50-44 Feb. 11.

Murray held a six point advantage, keeping it from the first quarter into the halftime. The difference remained in the second half as Murray held off the Saints for the win.

Paschke and Eggers scored 13 points each. Chew scored 10 points and had six assists.

Clarke 60, Interstate 35 56

OSCEOLA – Clarke picked up a win over Interstate 35 (4-17) Feb. 11, winning 60-56.

Overtime was needed with the Lady Indians rallying back from a 14-point deficit to force an extra frame. At halftime, Clarke trailed 29-17.

Clarke outscored the Roadrunner girls 16-12 in OT to lock up what ended up being its final win of the season.

Tory Henry led Clarke in scoring with 16 points. Halsband and Kiaya Dunbar had 12 points each. Henry tallied seven steals and Josey Dunbar grabbed eight rebounds, leading the team in both category.
