Clarke, Central Decatur combine for three state-qualifiers

CRESTON – Clarke and Central Decatur combined to send three wrestlers on from the Class 2A District 3 state-qualifying meet Saturday onto the Traditional State Wrestling Tournament this week.

Clarke sent 220-pounder Jake Smith to Saturday’s District meet for a chance to advance to state, while Central Decatur moved Devin Adams (132), Logan Jones (145), Zander Reed (160) and Class 2A No. 9 195 Tegan Carson.

Smith made his way to wrestle at the Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines with back-to-back wins from consolation. In the first round, Smith lost a 12-1 major decision to Clarinda’s Class 2A No. 3 Crew Howard.

Smith then pinned Southwest Iowa’s Samuel Daly at 2:29 to face Panorama’s Class 2A No. 8 Cooper Andersen in the second-place wrestleback.

Clarke head coach Brian Reece said he knew Smith was going to have to knock off Anderson if he wanted to make the State Tournament, and he did.

Smith scored a reversal from bottom position at the start of the second period, leading to a pin at 2:37.

“Really, (Anderson) has beat us with the legs the last two times we wrestled him, he turned us,” Reece said. “We worked on getting to that tripod and dumping him. The funny part was after the match was Jake said, ‘I’m not going to lie coach, I kinda let him put in the legs because I felt I could get that.’”

With Thursday’s State Tournament days away, Reece said he likes to take his wrestlers around the arena to show them the mat is the same and only the stage changes.

“To a certain extent now, he’s playing with house money,” Reece said. “You’re two matches away from medaling and that’s what I’m going to preach to him.”

Cardinals send two

Central Decatur ended its day with two of its four wrestlers moving on to the State Tournament.

Jones and Reed advanced with a first place and second-place finish, respectively.

At 145, Jones knocked off Creston/Orient-Macksburg’s Keaton Street in a 1-0 decision to face Atlantic’s Brian South in the finals. Jones scored a 5-2 decision win over South to claim a District title.

Reed’s route saw him make his way through the wrestleback, despite winning his first match in a 9-4 decision over Creston/Orient-Macksburg’s Briley Hayes. In the wrestleback, Reed faced Glenwood’s Zander Hayes.

Leading 3-2, Reed scored a pin at 1:49 to secure a spot at the State Tournament after starting out as the four seed at Sectionals in Winterset the week prior.

Carson’s day ended in a no contest for his wrestleback against Glenwood’s CJ Carter. He fell to Carter in the first round after a 7-3 decision. Carson then won his consolation match in a 10-1 major decision over Chariton’s Jayden Allen-Winston.

Carter fell in the finals match to Creston/Orient-Macksburg’s Class 2A No. 2 195 Jackson Kinsella to send him to the wrestleback against Carson.

Adams’ day was similar, falling to eventual second-place finisher Triston Barncastle of Creston/Orient-Macksburg in the first round. Barncastle won a 15-8 decision, but Adams recovered with a 4-2 decision win over Clarinda’s Michael Mayer to move to the wrestleback.

Barncastle fell in the finals to Winterset’s Keegan Jensen, forcing a no contest in the wrestleback against Adams.
