Clarke, Central Decatur advance five wrestlers to Districts

Clarke and Central Decatur combined to send five wrestlers from their respective Sectionals Saturday to Districts.

Clarke’s Jake Smith was the lone Indian wrestler to move on from Class 2A’s Sectional 6. He’ll wrestle Saturday, Feb. 13 at Creston, beginning at noon.

Smith scored a bye in the first round and won a 3-2 decision in an ultimate tie breaker over Atlantic’s Devin McKay. In the first-place match, Smith wrestled Panorama’s Class 2A No. 8 220 Cooper Anderson. Smith lost a 9-5 decision to move to the second-place wrestleback.

McKay battled back through consolation to face Smith, but due to their previous match, there was no wrestleback which gave Smith the win.

Mason Fry (152) and Will Smith (285) each made their way into the second-place wrestleback.

A pin in the quarterfinals, but loss to pin in the semifinals sent Fry to consolation. He pinned Panorama’s Kael Wirt in 1:12 to face Winterset’s Tyler Brown. The winner took second place and would advance to Districts. Brown pinned Fry at 2:30.

Will Smith received a bye in the quarterfinals but fell to pin in the semifinals to Atlantic’s Tristan Dorscher. Smith won a 15-1 major decision over Chariton’s Dallas Furman for a chance at second. Dorscher lost in the finals, resulting in no wrestleback for Will Smith.

Cardinals send four to Districts

Central Decatur’s core four wrestlers this season – Devin Adams, Logan Jones, Zander Reed and Tegan Carson – will advance to Districts at Creston Saturday, beginning at noon.

Class 2A No. 9 195 and top-seeded Carson received a bye in the first round before a second-period pin in the semifinals. Against Chariton’s Jayden Allen-Winston, Carson dominated with a 10-0 major decision to claim first place.

Adams (132), Jones (145) and Reed (160) all finished in second place with Jones and Reed each winning a wrestleback.

At 132, Adams had a bye in the first round and won a 2-1 decision over Atlantic’s Jaxson Bell in the semifinals. Adams fell to a 10-4 decision against Winterset’s No. 10 132 Keegan Jensen. Moved to consolation, Adams faced Bell again, winning the match with a no contest after the previous win.

Jones, as the top seed, scored a 17-1 technical fall at 5:16 in his first match, the semifinals. Facing Atlantic’s Brian South in the finals, South won a 6-4 decision in sudden victory. After moving to the second-place match in consolation, Jones scored a 9-2 decision against Winterset’s Eduardo Garcia.

Reed rounded out the advancing group behind three wins. In the first round, he pinned Clarke’s KJ Fry at 4:26 but lost the semifinals due to injury time.

In consolation, Reed scored a 6-2 decision win over Atlatnic’s Jarrett Armstrong and 5-1 decision win in the second-place match over Winterset’s Kael Forsyth.
