Area girls basketball roundup: Central Decatur knocks off POI rivals, Clarke wins back-to-back

Central Decatur 32, Mount Ayr 29

MOUNT AYR – Central Decatur (11-6) took down Mount Ayr (13-4) in a Pride of Iowa matchup Monday, 32-29.

The Cardinals led by one point after the first quarter, but they extended with a 9-2 second quarter. Mount Ayr rallied back with an 11-5 third quarter, but Central Decatur did enough in the fourth to hold on for the win.

Hallee Hamilton scored eight points to lead the team. Mara Dykes scored seven points with seven rebounds and five steals.

Clarke 46, Knoxville 40

OSCEOLA – Clarke (5-10) knocked of Knoxville (11-4) at home, 46-40 Monday to mark its first two-game winning streak this season.

The Lady Indians jumped out early with a 13-5 first quarter and 12-9 second quarter. Knoxville made a run in the second half, but Clarke’s 15-point fourth quarter sealed the win.

Murray 37, Moulton-Udell 28

ORIENT – Murray (11-8) took dow Moulton-Udell (6-12) in the Bluegrass Conference third-place game Saturday, 37-28.

Murray’s defense held Moulton-Udell to four points in the first half. The offense was consistent throughout all four quarter, putting up 12 points in the fourth quarter.

“Playing without the services of our two post players who stayed home sick, the rest of the girls did a pretty good job today,” Murray head coach Jerry Shields said. “Teryn (Shields) was able to hit some key outside shots and Megan (Keller) did well from mid-range. Jayda (Chew) did a great job of running the floor.”

Teryn Shields scored 14 points, Keller scored 13 points with nine rebounds and Chew scored three points with five assists.

Central Decatur 55, Southwest Valley 48

CORNING – Central Decatur beat Southwest Valley (3-13) 55-48 Friday.

The Cardinals trailed 26-19 at halftime, but 18-point second and third quarters brought the Cardinals back to a lead they would hold on to throughout the close.

Hamilton and Kyle Rockhold were double-digit scorers for Central Decatur, putting up 14 and 12 points, respectively. Rockhold also grabbed seven rebounds with three steals.

Clarke 57, Davis County 48

OSCEOLA – Clarke beat Davis County (5-14) 57-48 Friday.

Clarke held a slim lead through halftime, 25-21. Davis County tied the game at 36 at the end of the third quarter, but Clarke scored 21 points in the final eight minutes to secure the win.

Tory Henry scored a game-high 14 points for Clarke. Ali Henry also added double-digit scoring with 11 points.

Chariton 52, Central Decatur 38

LEON – Central Decatur fell short against Chariton (8-5) Thursday in a 52-38 loss.

Chariton led all four quarters, outscoring Central Decatur 24-11 in the first half before a 28-27 second half.

Lyndsey Dale scored 23 points with five steals.

Melcher-Dallas 37, Murray 33

ORIENT – Murray fell 37-33 to Melcher-Dallas (8-5) Thursday in the semifinals of the Bluegrass Conference Tournament.

Murray trailed 17-14 after the first half. As 12-point third quarter brought the game to a 26-point tie. Melcher-Dallas ended the fourth quarter outscoring Murray 11-7.

“The difference in (Thursday) and (Wednesday) was last night we made free throws and tonight we didn’t,” Jerry Shields said. “You could tell we didn’t have much legs under us. Still, we had opportunities down the stretch and didn’t take advantage of them.”

Murray shot 3-for-10 from the free-throw line. Jalie Baumfalk led scorers with 11 points.
