While city department stores and malls report a shortage of Santa representatives, long lines, and a scarcity of parking spaces, small town Osceola has none of these problems. During Shop Small Saturday/Holliday Brilliance, even at the larger stores, shoppers park just a few feet from the door and once inside, transact with familiar business owners and employees. Downtown, families or groups of friends leisurely strolled from one store to the next or waited in short lines for various activities. No matter where they shopped in Osceola, however, they supported local businesses and the local economy.
Small Business Saturday, launched by American Express in 2010, at the height of the Great Recession, promotes directing dollars to local stores. Now, it’s observed in all 50 states, and in 2011, the U.S. Senate passed a resolution recognizing Small Business Saturday.
The idea of shopping local resonated with more people during the pandemic. Chambers of Commerce and Main Street organizations produced many promotions to shine a light on the importance of keeping dollars at home and helping local businesses. Hometown businesses pour millions of tax dollars into local economies to support schools, hospitals, and emergency services, and local projects, events, and people.
Last year, the U.S. Small Business Administration reported Americans spent nearly $20 billion on Small Business Saturday in contrast with a $100 billion-plus cumulated spending over the previous decade of this shopping holiday. Shopping-Buying locally keeps an estimated $.67 or more of every dollar spent in the community. https://www.uschamber.com/co/grow/marketing/small-business-saturday
The Osceola Holiday Brilliance/Shop Small Saturday provided a traditional experience to kick-off the Christmas season: Mr. and Mrs. Claus, his reindeer an elf representative on the courtyard; a holiday craft workshop; letters to Santa and Santa’s Mailbox; Gingerbread house contest; mule team wagon rides; small business shopping deals with merchants who know their customers, and a lighted parade all within minutes of anyone living in Clarke County.
Holiday Brilliance/Shop Small in Numbers-the Sponsors and Volunteers Who Made It Happen
Thank you to Premier Sponsor Community First Credit Union and Hunsicker and Associates for their support, and to the Clarke County Development Corporation for sponsoring Santa’s Reindeer.
With an average time spent of at least two and a half hours each, it took 28 people over 70 hours to set-up the light displays on the courtyard. People representing several local businesses volunteered to help with the job spread over five days; without their dedication, the courtyard would be much darker during the holiday season.
