Wendell Mathes


Wendell Roland Mathes, son of Wendell William Mathes and Daphne Mable (Bissell) Mathes was born September 22, 1941 in Tingley, Iowa, and passed from this life Friday, March 19, 2021, in Murray, Iowa, at 79 years of age.

Roland grew up around Tingley and attended country school. He moved with his family to Murray in 1955 and he graduated from Murray High School. Roland served in the US Army from December of 1963 until November of 1965. He was united in marriage to Karen Kaye Crabb on July 20, 1974, at the Murray Methodist parsonage in Murray.

Roland was a hard working family man. He worked for L.L. Pelling in road construction for almost 50 years. In the winters in his off time he built dog houses that he would sell, he said he had built over a thousand dog houses that are across Southern Iowa. Roland was a collector, collecting many things including stamps, electric insulators, and building model cars. He also loved to read and always had a book in his hand. Roland was a long standing member of the Murray American Legion and received a certificate for being a 50 year member.

Those relatives who preceded Roland in death were his wife Karen; daughters Tamara and Scotti Therese; parents, Wendell William and Mable Mathes; sisters, Marie Wetzel and Shirley Deatsch.

Roland leaves to cherish his memory; son, Cory Mathes of Murray, Iowa, son, Jeff LaMastres of Murray, Iowa; grandchildren, Mike (Shannon) Brobst of Coralville, Iowa, Debbie (Chad) Aldrich of Afton, Iowa, Christian (Alyson) LaMastres of Murray, Iowa, Jasmine Mathes of Osceola, Iowa; 11 great-grandchildren, as well as other relatives and many friends.

Services will be held at Kale Funeral Home, Monday, March 29, 2021, at 10:30 a.m. with Pastor Dwayne Henrichs officiating.

Family will greet friends from 2-4 p.m. Sunday, March 28, 2021, at Kale Funeral Home.

The use of face coverings at either event are REQUIRED. If you are unable to attend the service in person, a live stream will be available at www.kalefuneralhome.com on Roland’s tribute wall beginning at 10:30 a.m., Monday.

Interment will be in the Murray Cemetery
