OST softball roundup: Cardinals', Lady Indians' season comes to an end

Twin Cedars 6, CD 2

BUSSEY – Central Decatur’s season ended after a 6-2 loss to Twin Cedars Friday in the Class 1A Region 2 semifinal.

Twin Cedars scratched the first run in the bottom of the third inning before Central Decatur tied the game with one in the top of the fourth. The Sabers added three in the fifth and two in the sixth to take a commanding lead. The Cardinals scored one more run in the top of the sixth.

Central Decatur’s record finishes at 15-8 and 5-5 in the Pride of Iowa Conference.

Albia 5, Clarke 1

ALBIA – Clarke’s season finished facing Class 2A’s top-ranked team Albia with a 5-1 loss Friday in the Class 3A Region 4 semifinal.

The Blue Demons scored five runs in the bottom of the third inning. Albia added one more run in the fourth to take a 5-0 lead. Clarke scored one in the top of the seventh.

Kiaya Dunbar hit a solo home run to account for the Lady Indians’ lone hit.

Clarke finishes 2020 11-6 overall and 5-1 in the South Central Conference.

CD 3, Stanton 1

LEON – Central Decatur edged by Stanton Wednesday with a 3-1 win during the quarterfinals of Class 1A Region 2 play.

Stanton broke a scoreless game with one run in the third inning. One inning later, in the bottom of the fourth, the Cardinals put up three runs to take the lead.

Kylee Rockhold pitched all seven innings, allowing one earned run while striking out 11 batters and giving up one walk. Alaina Applegate hit her second home run of the week, accounting for her lone hit.

Clarke 3, Centerville 2

OSCEOLA – Clarke knocked off Centerville 3-2 in the quarterfinals of Class 3A Region 4 Wednesday.

The Lady Indians held a 1-0 lead until Centerville scored two runs in the top of the fourth inning. Clarke responded in the bottom half with two runs of its own, matching Centerville.

Emma Bolton pitched all seven innings, striking out eight batters and allowed one earned run. Astazia Watson hit a two-run home run to account for her only hit of the game. Kaityln Halsband went 1-for-3 with an RBI.

Melcher-Dallas 17, Murray 2 (3)

MELCHER – Murray’s season came to an end after a 17-2 loss to Melcher Dallas Monday, July 16.

Murray scored one run in the top of the first, but Melcher-Dallas responded with three in the bottom half of the inning. The Saints scored 14 runs in the bottom of the second to take a 17-1 lead. The Lady Mustangs added another in the third but were mercy ruled in the third.

Chloe Church, Jayda Chew, Bailey Frederick and Teryn Shields each tallied one hit, contributing to all four of Murray’s hits.

The Lady Mustangs record finishes at 5-9 overall and 4-5 in the Bluegrass Conference.

Central Decatur 14, Essex 2 (4)

LEON – Central Decatur knocked off Essex 14-2 in four innings during the first round of Class 1A Region 3.

The Cardinals wasted no time against the Trojans, taking a 3-2 lead after the first and scoring five runs in the second. Central Decatur’s offense kept up the pressure, scoring six runs in the fourth inning to complete the mercy-rule win.

Riley Bell and Applegate each hit a home run on the day. Bell drove in three runs while Applegate pushed four runs across.
