Robert Bruce Oehlert (Bob) of Woodburn and Osceola, Iowa, passed away on January 31, 2020, at the age of 94. He was born October 21,1925, to Herschel and Emily (Baldwin) Oehlert. He had three brothers, Herschel Allen Jr. (Allen), Joseph Donovan (JD), and his twin brother, William Brian (Bill).Bob was raised on a farm in Woodburn, attended Woodburn Schools, and graduated from Woodburn High School in 1943. Having lost Allen, his oldest brother, in 1943 in WWII, Bob then enlisted in the Marines and served as a tailgunner on a B25 Mitchell Bomber. After returning home from military service, he married Jean Marie Mason on January 2,1946. He insisted that he knew since seeing Jean in school when they were in the 5th grade that she was the one he was going to marry. They had three children, Karen Friedlander (Chris), Kathi Oehlert, and Kevin Oehlert (Eugenia). They were married at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Des Moines, Iowa, with Roger Williams playing the organ on January 2, 1946. Bob farmed as well as carried the mail for Woodburn’s rural route from 1949 to 1962. He continued to farm until 1971, when the family moved to Indianola and he became a commodities broker. In 1978, Bob and his wife, Jean, returned to Osceola to reside.Bob was very warm, with a good sense of humor and a knack for making friends wherever he went. He enjoyed talking politics, world news, sports and the stock market. During election years, he would collect ballots for those in the community unable to get to the polls. Bob would not miss the Jeopardy quiz TV shows that aired back to back every afternoon. He enjoyed playing cards and going to the VFW in Woodburn for the Friday jams and Saturday night dances where he and his wife would listen to music, dance and socialize. He was the proud and loving granddad of his grandchildren, Sam Friedlander (Julia), Jill Friedlander, Megan Delic (Adin), Todd Oehlert, and Kiley Rodriguez (Adam), Rachael Baratta and Sarah Baratta and shared his overwhelming joy of being a great grandfather with Adela, Aden, Adam (Delic), Peyton (Rodriguez) and Noah (Friedlander). He leaves behind his wife, Jean, 3 children Karen (Chris), Kathi, Kevin (Eugenia), 7 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren, his nieces and nephews April Oehlert Daly (John), Emily Oehlert Miller, Marty Oehlert (Becky), Swede Oehlert (Teri), Elizabeth Oehlert Harger (Charlie) and Elynne Oehlert Stone (Lonnie).
