Charles was born Oct. 23, 1944, at Clarke County Hospital in Osceola to Raymond Dean and Helen Merle (Putz) Clark. His brother, Dwight “Shorty” Clark, came along three years later. The family lived on a farm south of Osceola until they moved to a farm north of Indianola. Duane went to school in Osceola thru the 8th grade and entered Indianola High School as a freshman, graduating in 1962. It was at Indianola High school where he met his lifelong sweetheart, Shirley J. (Taylor) Clark. They were married 57 years and from this marriage had two children: Helen “Duana” (Clark) Laird of Urbandale and Craig Dean Clark of Austin, Minnesota.

Duane and Shirley lived most of their married life in and around Indianola. Duane was an assistant manager at a mobile training center in Oklahoma City and they lived there for two years. Upon returning to Indianola, Duane began selling Harveststores and later sold metal commercial and farm building throughout central Iowa. Duane had many customers who became friends throughout his time selling.

Duane retired in 1999 after he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s. He fought a long hard fight with the disease and never let a day go by without making sure he was being active and kept moving.

Duane and Shirley enjoyed going to auctions and went to several of them over the years. They enjoyed their time at the Brass Armadillo Antique Mall and the family of friends they made there.

In 2020, Parkinson’s began to take over Duane’s motor skills and he suffered numerous falls leading to him going into The Village Rehabilitation and Nursing Center. He never gave up trying to improve his walking, his interest in others and was always kidding around with the staff.

Duane would always ask: “What are we going to do today? or “How can I help you?”

Duane was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Helen Clark and his aunt, Opal Staley Burnett.

He is survived by his wife Shirley, his brother Dwight (Jacqueline) Clark, daughter Duana (Michael) Laird and son Craig (Anita) Clark; grandchildren: Cora Laird, Garrett, Peyton and Emma Clark; his nieces, nephew and cousins.

Shirley, Duana and Craig all wish to thank the staff at The Village and The Brass Armadillo for their kindness throughout this long battle.

Duane was a member of Warren Masonic Lodge No. 53, Za-Ga-Zig Shrine and Knights Templar.
