DES MOINES — Sarah Pate led a group of area athlete competing in four total events at the Drake Relays by placing fourth in the shot put Thursday.

Pate had throws of 37 feet, 9 inches and 39-04 on her first two throws, before unleashing a mark of 40-10.75 on her final throw of prelims to solidify her spot in the finals.

In finals, Pate had throws of 38-04.50, 40-03.50 and 40-07.

Four of the top eight placewinners in the high school girls shot put, including Pate, are from the South Central Conference.

“We were very happy with Sarah’s place in the finals,” Clarke head coach Renee Henry said. “She came out in the same place as she went in, and we were thrilled. She is looking forward to conference this Thursday. Any one of those four girls could win. It is like a Drake Relays rematch!”

Clarke junior Logan Weers, who qualified 20th for the Drake Relays, finished 14th in prelims of the high school boys 110 meter high hurdles with his time of 15.25.

The eighth-place cutoff for finals was 15.06.

Weers was fourth in heat number four. The three athletes who beat Weers in the heat all made finals.

Interstate 35’s sprint medley team of Jenna Sandquist, Staci Morris, Natalie Johnson and Maddie Beeler placed fifth in heat number two and 13th overall after coming in with the ninth-best qualifying time.

The Roadrunners ran 1:51.39 Friday, which was a season-best time for the team.

Beeler, the standout 400 meter runner who will run for University of Northern Iowa next year, took the baton in last place, but made up a lot of ground on the backstretch.

Coming off the final turn, Beeler swung out wide and attempted to move up a few more places before running out of steam and finishing fifth.

The Roadrunners came back Friday night with the 4x100 relay team of Sandquist, Morris, Johnson and Maddie Albers to finish 70th out of the 80-team field with a time of 52.72, which was also a season’s best.

Clarke also hosted the Clarke Girls Invite Thursday. After competing at Drake, Pate rushed back to Osceola to compete in the home meet, where she won the shot put and the discus while setting a new school record in the discus at 128-08.

The Lady Indians picked up second-place performances from Kylar McCann in the 1,500 (5:47.75) and Tyra Riddle in the 100 hurdles (18.42).

Clarke received third-place performances from the shuttle hurdle relay team of Allyssa May, Bronwyn Miller, Jennifer Brandt and Riddle; the 4x800 relay team of Alayna Diveny, Josefina Avalos, McCann and Delaney May; and May in the open 800.
