The fourth, fifth and sixth graders represented Interstate 35 Elementary Schools well at the Pride of Iowa Youth Football League Super Bowl V held on the Graceland College Field on Sunday. The I-35 Blue Roadrunners played against the I-35 White Roadrunners and the Blue Junior team won the championship with a score of 20-8. The sixth graders played in the second game. The blue team won over the white team of the senior Roadrunners in overtime with a score of 14-7. The young players are coached by Jeff Pontier, Russ Godfrey. Tod Richardson, John Goering, Chris Cummings, Dan Kozak, Pat McFarland, Duane Steward, Sean Kennedy, Keith Ostling, Darrell Beam, Travis Egli, Bryan Arzani, Jeff Thompson, Chad Daniels, and Tom Hutton. It seemed quite unusual to have all the games played by Interstate 35 players and to have the cheering fans root for all the players. The boys brought all those trophies home to their school, the Roadrunners all played their very best to get to the Super Bowl and they did a great job in the tournament play.

October 18-24 is National Character Counts Week. It is a time to celebrate acts of kindness, character and good deeds in our community. What are the six pillars of character? Trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship that build words, actions, and deeds of people and children in the community. Do you know of someone who should be recognized for their acts of caring? This week we recognize the following: LaVon Howell quietly works in many places helping others. He delivers meals to the shut ins. He volunteers at the American Legion, the Lion's Club, the New Virginia Area Development, which, also, includes the Gerry Allen Memorial Park projects, and he is always a blood donor donating every eight weeks or so. Pat and Erin Thornburgh are tirelessly working with the Boy Scout troops in our area and all the projects for these troops, Erin serves on the Gerry Allen Memorial Park Board and, also, on the City Council. They both volunteer many hours for local events such as the Old Settlers celebration, and all. Rob Conway is always there to help with a community project. He has worked long hours getting the New Virginia United Methodist Church ready for a Red Cross disaster center. He has volunteered his time to mow lawns for someone in need. He helps to care for his shut in mother-in-law at their home where she resides. Wayne Weeks delivers meals about every day to the shut ins. He, also, helps at the Meal site. He donates many hours at his church with mowing the lawn and other maintenance there. These arc only a few worthy volunteers. Can you add to our list? Please let us know.
