Betty Irene Schaffer

Betty Irene Schaffer, age 89, of Osceola, Iowa, the daughter of William Price and Mabel Irene (Hamilton) Akes, was born December 20, 1929, in Decatur County, Iowa. She died at Westview Acres in Leon, Iowa on Monday, September 30, 2019.

Betty grew up living with her grandmother, Mae Hamilton, in Decatur County around Davis City, Iowa. She graduated from Lamoni High School in 1948. She began working as a seamstress at Snowden’s in Osceola and later worked at O’Bryan Brothers in Leon, Iowa. She met and married Keith Merlin Schaffer while working in Osceola. They lived in South Dakota and had one daughter. The family moved to Osceola in 1969.

Preceding her in death were her parents; husband, Keith in 2009; and step-sister, Nelma Strasburg. Survivors include her daughter, Anita Pottorff and husband, Tim, of Weldon, Iowa; granddaughter, Laura Murrow and husband, David, of Weldon, Iowa; three great granddaughters, Alexis Jensen and Jesse, Katheena Stephenson and Kevin, all of Osceola, and Mariah Stephenson of Weldon; great, great granddaughter, Natalynn; step-granddaughter, Charrissa Lewis and Bobby and their children, Skyler, Bobby Ray, Wyatt, Audrey, and Alyx, all of Osceola; half-brothers, Gary Akes and Merlene of Runnells, Iowa and Donald Akes of Des Moines, Iowa; and other relatives and friends.

A memorial service will be held at the Slade – O’Donnell Funeral Home in Leon, Iowa at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, October 8, 2019, with Joe Havard officiating. Burial will be in the Maple Hill Cemetery, Osceola, Iowa at a later date.
