CCHS volleyball team contributes to Clarke Schools Food and Clothing Pantry

The Clarke Schools Food and Clothing Pantry gained 570 items and $200 cash because of the High School volleyball team. The Clarke volleyball team collected items for the pantry Sep. 9.

High School volleyball head coach, Shawn Pavlik brought this idea to the team and all the players were on board immediately. This particular project was chosen after Pavlik talked with Becky Jones-Webb a CCHS English teacher and one of the main people who run the pantry.

“She had said that after Back to School Night it had kind of gotten wiped out from people coming in so they were really low on items,” said Pavlik. “So it kind of came to me that that would be really good to do for a service project and it would be good for the girls to do something outside of volleyball and something that would be good for the community.”

The whole volleyball team, made up of 30 girls, was split up into three groups, the freshman group, JV group and the varsity group and it became like a competition. Each group went to a different grocery store.

Varsity went to Fareway to collect items, JV went to Wal-Mart and the freshman group went to Hy-Vee.

“They were really excited to see how many people were willing to donate and that was a good thing to see,” said Pavlik. “They all were positive about it and decided that this is something they’d like to do even going forward.”

The freshman group won their competition collecting 205 items, Varsity collected 187 items and JV collected 178 items. Pavlik, Christa Subbert, assistant coach and Kimberly Adams, freshman coach all helped make this service project possible.

“I would like to thank Fareway, Hy-Vee, and Wal-Mart for allowing us to gather these items for our service project,” said Pavlik.
