CARLISLE – Two Clarke boys advanced on Saturday, winning their respective weight classes in the class 2A Sectional 11 to move on to districts.

Seniors Jonathan Bair (170) grabbed second, and Riley Domina worked his way through the wrestleback, claiming second place. With both placing second the Clarke seniors keep their high school careers alive.

Wrestling at 170, Bair was given a bye in the first round, but went the distance in his first two matches of the day. Facing Bondurant-Farrar’s Cody Hall to move on to the final, Bair came away with the 10-4 major decision win.

Two takedowns in the first period, including two near pins put Bair ahead after the first three minutes at 6-1, but the second period saw a second wind from Hall as he scored a takedown of Bair. Bair escaped the takedown, controlling the pace of the match for the final frame enough to not let Hall muster a comeback.

Bair’s next match had him paired off against PCM’s Jarron Trausch (34-4) for the 170 sectional title. Trausch was given the 6th overall ranking for the 170 class by The Predicament going into the afternoon tournament.

A second period escape and takedown for Trausch gave PCM the advantage in the points column. Bair was able to sneak out of Trausch’s hold twice in the second to gain points, but two escapes were canceled out by two takedowns for Trausch, leading to PCM pulling away in points.

Fortunately, the wrestleback portion of the bracket led to Bair not having to wrestle a third time, placing second due to his previous win over Hall.

The experience of the last three years leading into sectional and district wrestling has been crucial for Bair and his success.

“It’s been everything, you know, without the last three years (I wouldn’t be here),” said Bair. “I went 13-20 as a freshman and I’ve put in a lot of work and I’m excited to get to districts.”

For Domina, the route to winning his 138 bracket was similar. Domina’s first round bye paired him up against Bondurant-Farrar’s Kaeden Lozano (29-13).

Domina dominated his match against Lozano from the start, getting a takedown and two near falls in the first frame, going up 6-0. Domina grabbed a pin nearly halfway through the second period at 3:35.

Domina faced off against Carlisle’s Troy Schnathorst (31-9) next in the 138 final, falling in a 10-2 major decision loss.

A takedown late in the first period for Domina had Clarke’s chances to claim three class looking good, but Schnathorst came back and reversed his way into a near pin of Domina.

Another reversal and near fall in favor of Carlisle put Schnathorst ahead enough for the eight-point win.

The loss prompted Domina to grapple for second in the wrestleback, taking on Chariton’s Adrian Hill.

Domina made quick work of Hill, going ahead in points on a takedown and near fall before pinning Hill at 1:29 to secure the second place position.

Extending the season to districts has been a grind for Domina, but the process has been a fun one for Domina and his teammates.

“It’s been a lot of fun, I’d say, with everybody here,” said Domina. “It’s been the same group of guys since Day One. The experience for me in wrestling difficult opponents at times (is important), but I’m having fun with it. ... It’s been a fun experience with everyone.”

Clarke places fourth

With two individual wrestlers moving on, Clarke as a group was unable to advance as it finished fourth with 129 points.

Carlisle and Prairie City-Monroe both advanced, running away with 260 and 250.5 points, respectively. Entering the tournament PCM sat atop the rankings in Class 2A, according to The Predicament

With a young team facing tough competition, head coach Brian Reece knew the talent of his wrestlers.

“To get two district qualifiers according to seeds that’s what we should have expected,” said Reece in reference to Bair and Domina. “We had a really close match there at 145 that I thought we had a chance, but we gave ourselves opportunities and that’s all we can ask.”

Colby Wilken (145) fell by decision 11-4 to Carlisle’s Darek Tingle. Four takedowns from Tingle in the final frame helped push his point total ahead of Wilken’s, giving him a six-point differential in the third period alone.

In the consolation, Wilken beat Bondurant-Farrar’s Alex Hall by a 5-3 decision and was unable to get into the wrestleback due to his earlier match to Tingle, giving him third.

UP NEXT – Bair and Domina will roll into districts on Saturday at 12 p.m. in the Knoxville Class 2A District 6 tournament.

With the season extending another week, Reece understands that the script to get to Wells Fargo Arena can be rewritten at any time.

“You get to the district tournament and really anything can happen,” said Reece. “It’s just about getting your chance and this is what we talked to our guys about.”
