The Southern Iowa Music Teachers Association held their annual Piano Jamboree event on April 21. Eighteen kindergarten through seventh grade students came from Indianola, Murray, New Virginia and Osceola for a morning of music, fun and learning. This year’s theme was Claude Debussy and the whole tone scale. The students participated in workshops including musical games, a composer showcase about the life and music of Claude Debussy and worked with clinician Deb Ausborn of Lytton, Iowa.

Three weeks later, 19 students performed wonderfully in a spring recital on May 12. All study piano and/or percussion with Rachel McCoy of Osceola. First-time performers were Lily Howe of New Virginia, and Gina Johnson and Brennan Kerr of Osceola. Two high school seniors performed their last recital. Kylie Shields, Murray High School graduate, studied piano with McCoy for eight years, and MacKenzie Slykhuis, Clarke High School graduate, studied piano with McCoy for three years.

Thank you to all of the students for their hard work this past year. And a huge thanks to the parents and grandparents who encouraged and transported students to lessons and events all year long.

McCoy is a Nationally Certified Teacher of Music in Piano and has been an active member of the Iowa Music Teachers Association and the Music Teachers National Association for over ten years.
