A forestry field day will be held Tuesday, October 17th, 2017 at Stephens State Forest-Lucas Unit.
Registration will begin at 12:30 pm and the field tours will conclude by 4:00 pm. There is no cost or preregistration for the field day and the public is invited.
Co-sponsors of forestry educational field days are the Iowa Department of Natural Resources and Iowa State University Forestry Extension. The program will include harvesting for sustainable oak-hickory forests and timber sales marketing. Discussions will also center on shelterwood vs. clearcut methods, choosing trees to sell, lump-sum sales, bidding process, logging contracts, impacts on vegetation (woodland pollinators and migratory birds), and post-harvest timber stand improvements. The field day will begin at Lucas Unit Middle Campground on 137th Trail, the same location as last year.
Directions from Lucas: Go west on Hwy 34 approx. 1 mile (look for brown State Forest sign), turn left (south) on 137th Trail. Stay on 137th Trail for approx. 1 mile. Meet at campground on east side of the road. For additional information or questions, please contact Jeremy Cochran at (641)774-8733 or Jessica Flatt at (641)774-4459.
