WINTERSET — Clarke’s girls and boys track and field teams were a bit shorthanded at Friday’s Husky Co-Ed Invitational in Winterset.
Each team still found a few bright spots on a cold and windy night to run in Madison County.
The Lady Indians placed fifth with 60 points. Winterset won with 171 points, while Earlham was second with 123 points.
The Indian boys placed fifth with 44 points. Earlham won with 178 points.
Hurdles led the way for the Lady Indians. The shuttle hurdle relay quarter of Solanna Zimmerman, Hollie Miller, Ashlynn Oehlert and Bailey Zimmerman won in 1:11.93, their best time by two seconds.
Bailey Zimmerman bested the field in the 100-meter hurdles, finishing first in 16.23 seconds, with Solanna Zimmerman second in 17.52.
Miller was second in the 400 hurdles in 1:23.59.
“Our hurdles ran better than previous nights,” said Clarke coach Christa Subbert. “Bailey and Solanna had good times in the 100 hurdles.”
The Lady Indians fought the injury bug.
“We had a lot of injuries and girls that at the last minute couldn’t come,” Subbert said. “Overall, we ran well for a cold, windy night.”
On the boys side, Byron Rivera won the high jump with a leap of 5-6. Payton Winship was fourth in the long jump, the sprint medley was fourth, Amanuel Fry was fourth in the 400 hurdles and the 4x100 relay was fourth.
“A couple guys ran pretty well, had some of their seasons-best overall,” said Clarke coach Kyle Eckermann. “We’re still growing.”
Injuries also hampered the Indian boys.
“We fought through a lot of injuries and the guys fought through them,” Eckermann said.
The Indians have a big week this week. They were at Carlisle Tuesday and at Van meter Thursday.
“We’ll take that to prepare some stuff for conference, get healthy,” Eckermann said.
