Every picture tells a story

Roy had worked in his father’s creamery in Murray for several years since their move in 1896 from Pennsylvania, but his real dream was to be a photographer. He studied photography and also learned from a Creston artist. In January 1901, he took over the Murray studio of T.F. Clark. Roy handled a full line of supplies for the amateur photographer, in addition to taking first class photographs on glass plate negatives. It was noted in the Murray news that the good-looking people of the community were thankful they had an artist that was capable of making a true likeness on a piece of cardboard.

In January 1902, he sold his Murray studio. It was in Murray he met Amy Daniel, who had studied music at Drake University for two years and taught piano in Murray upon her return. They were married March 4, 1902, at her parents’ home. The bride was attired in French organdy with point lace yoke, white ribbon and appliqué trim, the groom in traditional black. They took a wedding trip east for several months, leaving on No. 6 train.

In May 1902, Roy purchased Swearingen’s studio in Osceola, and was known as the South Side Photographer. They operated the studio until December 1905, selling it back to Swearingen, who had moved to Leon. The Curries operated the studio at Murray again until April 1906, moving back to Osceola where Roy clerked at Goldsmith’s Department Store. Twin daughters, born in 1907, passed away within two weeks of each other at six and seven months old. Son James was born in 1908, and Richard in 1913.

In 1911, they had moved to the Daniel farm near Van Wert and later a farm south of Murray, where they raised chickens. Roy worked in the Soll Grocery store in Murray until his retirement in 1952, when they returned to Osceola to care for Amy’s father, Albert Daniel. Roy died suddenly on March 5, 1954, of a ruptured appendix. He had worked at Western Auto until his death. Amy passed away in February 1969 in Chicago, where she had made her home for several years with her sister.
