Bemis recognized in Sports Spotlight

Sports Spotlight acknowledges these noteworthy high school athletes for their accomplishments in the sports of softball and baseball. These athletes have reached a high level of athleticism, while maintaining sportsmanship to its utmost degree.

Libby Bemis, senior, Clarke (Osceola) – Bemis has helped lead Clarke to the state softball tournament with a 23-3 record in the circle this season. In 165 innings, the senior allowed just 84 hits and 27 earned runs and an ERA of 1.15 while striking out 218. She also opened up the 2014 state tournament with a 3-inning perfect game in a 13-0 victory against Spirit Lake.

Nicky Nelson, senior, West Des Moines Valley – Nelson has been solid all season on the mound for West Des Moines Valley. His 6-2 record and 0.83 ERA in nearly 60 innings of work are among the best in Class 4A and has held opponents to a .198 batting average this season. In eight starts and four relief appearances, Nelson has allowed just seven earned runs.
