Clarke drops two at Davis County

BLOOMFIELD — The Clarke baseball team fell to 1-27 for the season with a doubleheader loss to Davis County here on July 3.

Clarke gave itself a chance in the first game against Davis County, taking an 8-3 lead in the third inning.

But, Davis County countered with six runs in the bottom half of the third inning and then held Clarke scoreless for the remainder of the game.

Gable Reece took the loss on the hill, giving up 10 runs on 10 hits with five walks and seven strikeouts.

Leadoff batter Reed Kale went 2-for-4 at the plate with three runs scored, three stolen bases and two runs batted in. Gordon Witt finished 2-5 with one run scored, two stolen bases and one RBI.

Reece went 1-4 with one stolen base and two RBI. Zach Hermsen, Landon Spurgin and Yahia Aly each finished with one hit in the loss.

Davis County scored in every inning in the nightcap, an 11-1 win in six innings.

Clarke managed one run in the top of the third inning.

Kale scored the lone Clarke run after a walk and a stolen base. Reece went 1-3 with a double. Witt also finished with a hit and a stolen base. Hermsen added one stolen base, while junior Dustan Van Loon recorded one hit.

Hermsen took the loss on the hill, giving up 11 runs on 10 hits, walking five and striking out none.

Clarke is scheduled to play at Lamoni today.
