Decatur County 4-H events to be held

For the past couple of years, Decatur County 4-H Youth Council has hosted the annual wheelchair basketball tournament with teams young and old participating.

It is that time of year again to gather for some friendly competition. This year’s tournament will be held at the Central Decatur Middle School/High School Gym on Saturday, March 22.

The first game is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. Teams consisting of five to 10 players need to contact Decatur County Extension Office by March 19 in order to participate.

There is a team entry fee of $10 with a 50/50 payback to the winning team. Teams must include at least two members of the opposite sex on their roster, and players may only be a member of one team. Each team member’s feet must touch the court when seated in a wheelchair for everyone’s safety.

Also this year, Decatur County 4-H Youth Council will take over the annual chili cook-off and have both an adult division and youths age 15 and under division. Enter your prize chili in the traditional or homestyle category and win bragging rights, as well as a piece of the prize money.

Chili entries need to be checked in at 3 p.m. with judging by a panel of independent judges beginning at 4 p.m. There will be a $5 entry fee for each crockpot of chili with 100 percent payout in prize money to the winners. Serving will begin at 5 p.m. and the cost is $2 at the door (ages 8 and under free).

Bring your best pot of chili or just come enjoy watching all the fun and do some taste testing yourself.
