Clarke varsity softball catcher to play for Team AIST on Italy tour

Kassidy Spurgin, varsity catcher for the Lady Indians softball team, has received an invitation to join the 2014 Italy Tuscany Series with American International Sports Teams (AIST). AIST has been taking top athletes to compete internationally around the world since 2002.

Spurgin, who is the daughter of James and Christine Spurgin and granddaughter of Don and Karen Spurgin of Osceola and Merliene Maudlin of Dexter, has been chosen among a select group of athletes across the nation who have earned All-American, All-Region, or All-Conference honors to play softball internationally.

Spurgin, who is currently a Clarke junior, received softball All-Conference honors her sophomore year and honorable mention her freshman year. This, along with her excellent academic standing earned her an invitation to play on the Italy Tuscany tour representing the USA. The tour offers a unique opportunity for her to be involved in international play and partake in the cultural and educational experience while on a 12-day tour of Italy.

“This is a once in a life-time opportunity and it is flattering to be recognized by AIST. Softball is my passion and it is nice that my hard work is paying off” Spurgin said. “I’m looking forward to representing Clarke County and realize I have a lot of hard work ahead to raise funds to participate; I’m confident that with support I can succeed.”

Spurgin will be performing fundraising activities, such as catching lessons, during the upcoming months to offset the $5,500 travel expense. Support for her trip can be sent to Kassidy Spurgin, P.O. Box 514, Osceola, IA 50213.
