Radon concerns for children

It’s yet another school year where Iowa’s parents have to worry about whether their child is breathing in radon — the second leading cause of lung cancer — while they learn.

It concerns me that testing and mitigating for radon in schools is not required. I’m afraid for the kids across Iowa who could be unknowingly breathing in this toxic gas.

Radon is the cause of an estimated 400 lung-cancer deaths in Iowa each year. It’s not only costing our state lives, but money in health-care costs.

These kids are our future. It’s our responsibility to make sure that future isn’t at risk every minute of every day they’re sitting in their classrooms.

I hope our lawmakers will take this into consideration and make the right move for Iowa when they have the opportunity during the next legislative session.
