Clarke softball improves to 8-1

Drops tough game to Winterset

The Clarke softball team lost a close game to Class 4A second-ranked Winterset in Winterset on June 4, losing 6-3.

The Lady Indians, ranked fifth in Class 3A, struck for one run in the top of the first inning, but surrendered three runs in the bottom half of the inning.

The Huskies added three more in the fourth inning, before Clarke scored one run in the fifth inning and in the seventh inning.

Libby Bemis went 2-for-3 at the plate in the game for the Lady Indians with two doubles and one run batted in. Sarah Pate also collected two hits in the loss.

Sydnee Redman, courtesy running for Bemis, scored two runs. Amanda Kindred and Ashley Gibbs each finished with one hit and one RBI apiece.

Bemis pitched for the Lady Indians, allowing six runs on eight hits. Only four of the runs were earned. Bemis walked four and struck out four in the loss.

Winterset senior pitcher Karly Olson struck out 12 Clarke batters and allowed eight hits while issuing just one walk.

Senior first baseman Savannah Marker drove in three runs for the Huskies, going 2-4 in the game with a double.

Clarke then picked up a 15-1 win over Albia on Monday.
