HCI Care Services nurse recognized during National Nurses Week

The week of May 6-12 was National Nurses Week, which was created to highlight the contributions of the nation’s 3.1 million registered nurses improving lives in various healthcare settings and contributing to the largest health care profession.

Kate Patterson and Sandy Mason are among these individuals helping patients and their families in Adair, Clarke, Union, Lucas, Madison and Warren counties at a time when they need it most. As nurses with HCI Hospice Care Services, they specialize in pain and symptom management, enabling patients and their families to live the end of their lives as fully as possible, enjoying the people and traditions they love. Additionally, they teach care practices to patients and their families.

We believe in quality of life and will provide compassionate care wherever you live,” Mason said.

Mason began working for HCI Care Services when the organization opened its Osceola office six years ago. She began her nursing career 13 years ago after earning her nursing degree from Tarrant County Jr. College, in Arlington, Texas. Mason is also one of only 284 Iowa nurses certified in hospice and palliative nursing accreditation through the National Board for Certification of Hospice and Palliative Nurses.

“I was inspired to pursue a career in hospice nursing after working in our local hospital and working along with the hospice nurses from HCI Care Services,” Patterson said.  “Their professionalism and patient care was always above and beyond and I felt it was an organization I would be proud to be a part of.”

Patterson has worked nearly two years with the organization as part of her four-year nursing career since graduating from Southwestern Community College in Creston.
