Clarke girls improve to 5-0 for season

The Clarke girls tennis team picked up victories over Centerville and Norwalk to improve to 5-0 for the season.

The Lady Indians won in a 9-0 sweep over Centerville on April 11. Clarke cruised in the victory, losing just five games in singles action and just five games in doubles play.

Kylar McCann won 8-2 at No. 1 singles over Makenzie Richmond. Libby Bemis was an 8-0 winner at No. 2 singles over Lauren Craver. Tracy Morgan picked up an 8-1 win over Brogan Bulechek in No. 3 singles.

Cassidy Bierbrodt won 8-1 at No. 4 singles, as did Macey Snell at No. 6 singles. Kacey Klemesrud was an 8-0 winner at No. 5 singles.

The doubles team of McCann and Bemis rolled to an 8-0 win at No. 1 doubles. Morgan and Bierbrodt picked up an 8-4 win at No. 2 doubles, while Klemesrud and Snell were 8-1 winners at No. 3 doubles.

The Clarke girls followed the win against Centerville with a 7-2 win at Norwalk on Monday.

McCann won a tough match at No. 1 singles over Michaela Pearson, 1-6, 7-5, 11-9. Bemis, meanwhile, dropped a tough match at No. 2 singles, 1-6, 6-4, 8-10, to Sam Roemer.

Morgan picked up a 6-3, 6-4 win over Sarah Roemer at No. 3 singles, while Cassidy Bierbrodt battled to a 6-0, 4-6, 10-2 win at No. 4 singles.

Klemesrud also went three sets with a 2-6, 6-3, 11-9 win at No. 5 singles. Snell lost to Liz Nimmo, 4-6, 1-6, at No. 6 singles.

Clarke swept the doubles matches, as McCann and Bemis won 7-5, 6-4 over Pearson and Sam Roemer. Morgan and Bierbrodt won 6-2, 6-2 over Maddie Cornish and Nimmo, while Klemesrud and Snell won 6-1, 6-1 over Marci Brenizer and Becka Ober.

The Lady Indians return to action on Tuesday against Corning.

Boys

The Clarke boys tennis team suffered its first defeat of the season on April 8, losing a close match at Norwalk, 6-5.

Norwalk started out with wins at No. 1 and No. 2 singles as Austin LaVelle defeated Clarke's Colin Morris 6-3, 7-5 and Grant Wright beat Jared Jamison 6-4, 6-3.

But the Indians took the next three singles matches as Yahia Aly won 4-6, 6-0, 10-7 at No. 3 singles over Jake Kaul.

Johannes Zehnter then won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 4 singles and Jacob Redman won 6-4, 6-3 at No. 5 singles.

Norwalk's Jacob Newman tied the meet up at 3-3 entering doubles play with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Ali Aly at No. 6 singles.

LaVelle and Wright put the Warriors back on top with a 6-2, 7-5 win at No. 1 doubles over Morris and Jamison.

But Clarke answered back again, as Yahia Aly and Zehnter won 6-3, 4-6, 10-8 at No. 2 doubles and Redman and Ali Aly won 6-4, 4-6, 10-3 at No. 3 doubles, giving Clarke a 5-4 advantage.

The two teams played five doubles matches, and Norwalk won the final two matches to take a 6-5 team victory.

Neil Hanson and Beylee Steele won 6-3, 6-0 over Holden Hewitt and Trevor Kirkpatrick at No. 4 doubles. Andy Sherer and Trey Castle won 7-6 (7-4), 7-5 over Matt Sebek and Rodrigo Mayorga at No. 5 doubles.

The Clarke boys return to action Tuesday at Corning.
