I-35 runs by Clarke for first win

Interstate 35, led by the rushing of Briar Vogel and Tommy Bregar, knocked off Clarke 38-6 Friday to earn its first win of the season.

The Roadrunners finish the season 1-8 overall and 1-5 in Class 2A District 6. Clarke finishes at 3-7 overall and 0-6 in District 6.

Bregar, a senior playing in his final game, proved to be a dual threat for the Roadrunners, completing 10-of-22 passes for 128 yards, while also rushing for 91 yards on 13 carries with two touchdowns.

Junior Briar Vogel sliced up the Clarke defense with 201 rushing yards on 15 carries, averaging 13 yards per carry. Vogel scored three touchdowns, including a long of 39 yards.

Sal Arzani added two carries for 34 yards, while senior Mitch Vipond had 30 yards on seven carries with a 2-yard touchdown run.

Freshman Jaylan White was the leading receiver for the Roadrunners in the contest, catching five passes for 45 yards. Junior Forrest Beeler caught one pass for 41 yards.

Defensively, senior Ethan Jones led the Roadrunners with 10 total tackles and an interception. Arzani and Vogel each recovered a fumble.

Interstate 35 held Clarke to just 78 yards of total offense.

Junior quarterback Dalton Sweeney, making just his second appearance since returning from mononucleosis, finished 1-8 passing with a 4-yard completion to senior Logan Weers.

Sweeney led the team in rushing with 23 yards on 10 carries. Junior Dylan Diveney had two carries for 19 yards.

Sophomore Junior Morales scored the lone touchdown for the Indians, running it in from 3 yards out.

Diveney led the team in tackling with 12, while Weers added 11 and junior Jacob Bair finished with 10, including a sack.

Sophomore Gordon Witt finished with eight tackles, including one sack, while also picking up a fumble and returning it 74 yards.

It was a tough finish to the season for the Indians, who started out 3-0 before Sweeney was diagnosed with mononucleosis.
