Murray softball win three of four in week

The Lady Mustangs enjoyed a week of wins in three of their four games.

On Monday, they hosted Mount Ayr and took down the Raiderettes 9-3 as Murray took an early lead with five runs in the first inning. No runs were made by either team in the second and third innings, with Murray scoring one in the fifth and three in the sixth. Mount Ayr would score one run in the fourth, fifth and seventh innings.

Two homeruns were hit in the game - one by Presley VanWinkle and one by Keirsten Klein; both players had two runs apiece. Only one Lady Mustang was struckout in the game, and on defense they putout their opponents 21 times.

Tuesday’s home game was played against Lamoni, with Murray picking up a narrow 9-7 win. Klein added another homerun to her stats in this game and five runs batted in. The Lady Mustangs who scored runs for the team included Klein with two, VanWinkle and Maliya Berry with two each, and one each from Leah Frederick, Aylah Miller and Paisley VanWinkle.

On the road Wednesday at Afton, Murray enjoyed a 13-point win over the Lady Eagles 16-3 in five innings. Murray put up six runs in the first two innings - five in the first and one in the second - before Afton scored their three in the third to Murray’s two; Murray made their final eight runs in the final inning.

Presley and Klein each had a home-run in this game. Six Lady Mustangs crossed home plate two times each - Presley, Frederick, Berry, Karina Romero, Miller and Paisley - Gracie Mathes once and Klein three times. The team had 11 runs batted in.

Their one loss of the week came at home Friday against Ankeny Christian 10-8. Murray enjoyed a lead going into the seventh inning 8-5, but were unable to stop the Lady Eagles from soaring past them with another five runs. Runs came form Frederick with three, two each from Presley and Klein and one from Miller. Murray had 22 putouts in the field.

As of last Thursday, Klein leads the state in all classes in batting averages with an average of .733. As of June 15, Klein has been at bat 33 times, had 22 runs and 24 hits. Of those hits, 13 were one-base hits, five two-bases and six home runs with 17 runs batted in. She has not struck out.

Murray softball moved to 7-4 for their season.
