Carson, Iowa — The Corning Center for Fine Arts, in collaboration with Pottery by the Creek, is proud to announce an immersive, hands-on workshop: the “Raku and Horsehair Pottery Decorating Experience.” Led by master potters Paul Koch and Javier Fox, this unique class invites participants to explore the dramatic and unpredictable beauty of alternative firing techniques.
Offered across four sessions—April 25, April 26, May 2, and May 3—the class runs from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. or 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., allowing participants to choose the date and time that best fits their schedule.
This workshop focuses on two striking ceramic methods:
- Raku Firing, an ancient Japanese technique known for its rapid firing process and stunning metallic, crackled finishes
- Horsehair Pottery, where horsehair is applied to hot pottery surfaces, creating delicate, one-of-a-kind carbon patterns
Participants will not only learn the technical process but also experience the excitement of pulling glowing-hot pottery from the kiln and watching surface transformations unfold in real time.
“Raku is about embracing unpredictability,” said instructor Paul Koch. “Every piece tells its own story through fire, smoke, and surface reaction. It’s something you have to experience firsthand.”
The featured works from the instructors showcase this artistry—from a sculptural vessel adorned with a flowing tree motif in iridescent glaze, to a luminous pot with rich metallic tones and fine crackle patterns—demonstrating the expressive range students can explore.
