Avis LaRae (Gere) Miler, age 66, of Leon, Iowa, was born August 16, 1953, in Valentine, Nebraska to Scottie and Merna (Grimm) Gere. She passed away May 15, 2020, at Mercy Hospital Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa.
Avis grew up living in several cities in the state of South Dakota. She went to high school in Sturgis, but completed her senior year at Central Decatur High School in Leon, Iowa, graduating in 1972.
Avis met and married Elmer Dwight Miler, Jr. on January 27, 1983. Together they raised three children, Okalena, Kirk, and Tony.
Avis worked a few years as an aide with the Head Start Preschool Program. Then she worked for 15 years at O’Bryan Brothers. Her latest job was working as a home health aide for South Central Home Health in Leon. She was still working as needed at the time of her death.
Some of the highlights of Avis’s life were the births of her grandchildren, spending time with her family, and attending and serving as a Sunday School teacher at Van Wert Assembly of God Church.
Avis was preceded in death by her parents and son, Kirk Miler. She is survived by her husband, Elmer Miler of Leon; children, Okalena and Bill Hill of Leon and Tony and Jennifer Miler of Osceola; grandchildren, Malorie and Monica Irving, Clayton, Tate, Reece, and Wade Hill, and Blair and Ty Miler; siblings, Shelda Gere of Leon, Velma and John Wengryn of Davis City, Iowa, Elwin Krug of Sturgis, South Dakota, and Darwin Gere of Van Wert, Iowa; and many more family and friends.
Funeral services will be held at the Van Wert Assembly of God Church with Pastor Orville “Butch” Black officiating. Burial will be in the Van Wert Cemetery, Van Wert, Iowa. Arrangements were through the Slade – O’Donnell Funeral Home in Leon, Iowa.
A memorial fund has been established by the Family.
