Melvin Scadden, 76, of Creston died Saturday, Oct. 17, 2020, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. Celebration of Life services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 23, 2020, at Powers Funeral Home in Creston. Pastor Doug Brunell will officiate the service. Burial will follow in Graceland Cemetery in Creston. Flag presentation will be conducted by Theodore J. Martens Creston VFW Post No. 1797. Open visitation will be from 2 to 7 p.m. with family receiving friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Powers Funeral Home in Creston. Masks are recommended and social distancing will be observed.

Melvin Ray Scadden was born Feb. 10, 1944, to Doris Joefid “D.J.” Scadden and Eugenia May (McWilliams) Scadden in Osceola. He graduated from Creston High School in 1962. After high school he enlisted with the U.S. Army. During his basic training in Fort Benning, Georgia, he married his wife Nadine Kay Jensen April 20, 1963. He was stationed in Germany and during this time he was a mechanic and was blessed with his son Brian Ray Scadden and later was blessed with his daughter Melissa Kay Scadden. He served two years before being honorably discharged Nov. 26, 1965.

Melvin returned home to Creston and began working for Union County Secondary Roads where he worked for 26 years until he retired. He enjoyed spending time working on his rental houses or wood working in his shop with his grandchildren. Melvin also enjoyed spending time with his great-grandchildren tending to his garden and taking walks. He loved his family and was always helping others anyway he could.

Melvin is survived by his wife Nadine Scadden; grandchildren: Brad (Sonya) Scadden and Rob (Storm) Branan both of Creston; great-grandchildren: Briley and Prestan Scadden, Ethan, Lucas, Brayson, Hannah and Khyler Branan; mother-in-law Bertha Jensen of Creston; brother Merlin (Kathy) Scadden of Creston; sisters: Martha Adams of Stanberry, Mo. and Marge Miller of Des Moines.

Melvin was preceded in death by his parents, D.J. and Eugenia Scadden, son Brian Ray Scadden, daughter Melissa Kay Scadden, brother Marvin Scadden, sisters Beverly Scadden and Mary (Lane) Schuldt, father-in-law Clyde S. Jensen, brothers-in-law Robert ‘Bob’ Adams and John D. Miller.
