Shirley Jackson
Shirley June Jackson, age 71 of Garden Grove, the daughter of Max Brown and Margaret LaJune (Akers) Rhodes, was born Nov. 30, 1938, in Decatur County. She died at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, on Saturday, Jan. 23, 2010.
Shirley’s mother died when she was a teenager, so Shirley helped look after her sisters and brother. She did the cooking and cleaning for the family. She continued her schoolwork and graduated valedictorian of her class from Van Wert High School in 1957.
On Sept. 14, 1957, she married Kenneth Wayne Jackson. They were blessed with three children, Max Wayne, Christopher Eugene, and Melissa May. Shirley spent most of her married life as a farm wife and a homemaker for her family. She enjoyed cooking, flowers, gardening, and yardwork. She liked to quilt and enjoyed giving them to family and friends.
Funeral services were held at the Slade – O’Donnell Funeral Home in Leon, at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 28, 2010, with Pastor Marvin Kauffman officiating. Burial was in the Leon Cemetery, Leon.
