The Truro Fire & Rescue department members and the Truro Fire & Rescue Association had a banquet on Saturday, Jan. 9, at the Truro Lion’s Hall. It was a family affair with each member providing a dish. A slide presentation was shown of events of the year and pictures of last year’s banquet. During the banquet the rescue personnel got called out on a rescue call.
St. Charles was saddened to learn that Phyllis (Hargis) Vanderflught, of St. Charles passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, Jan. 9 in Oklahoma City, Okla. while on a trip. She and her husband, LeRoy (Ron), of 54 years moved to St. Charles in 1992. Phyllis enjoyed sewing, gardening, crafts, photography, traveling and spending time with family and friends. Our deepest sympathy is extended to her husband, Ron, and to her family members and many friends. Visitation was held on Jan. 13, at Kale Funeral Home in Osceola and her funeral service was held on Jan. 14, at Kale Funeral Home. Burial was in the Vandalia Cemetery in Vandalia.
The first class of the New Year on “Knowing your Computer” was held at the Interstate 35 Communications building on Jan. 12. There were several of us there and even some new faces. This lesson was Intro to Microsoft Word. I thought this class, like the others, was really good. The instructor taught me things I didn’t know how to do on the computer and shortcuts in doing them. We have a very nice instructor that INS sends to us and he is very patient with all our questions.
Please remember Eldon Schultz in prayer as he is recovering from knee replacement surgery. At last report he was doing really well. I believe they thought he was doing better than the last time when he had knee replacement done. You just can’t keep a good man down! Eldon had his surgery done in the new Methodist Hospital in West Des Moines.
The Madison-Warren Ecumenical Association was planning a breakfast on Saturday, Jan. 23, at the St. Charles Parish but it has now been canceled. The soup supper is still planned and will be held at the Peru United Methodist Church on Friday, Feb. 19.
A spaghetti fundraiser will be on Feb. 7 at the Truro Lion’s Hall. It will be sponsored the Truro Fire & Rescue Association.
The Betterment Committee is planning a Valentine’s Dinner on Feb. 13 from 5-8 p.m. at the Truro Lion’s Hall. The cost of the meal will be $15 per person or $25 a couple. Dance to Terre Haute from 9 p.m.-1 a.m. Call Jennifer Collins to purchase your dinner tickets in advance at 515-975-2148. Tickets are also available for purchase from any Betterment Committee member. To attend the dance is $7 per person or $10 a couple.
Calendars for 2010 are being sold for $8 by the Truro Betterment Committee.
The Truro Fire & Rescue Association and the fire & rescue department will hold their regular business meeting on Thursday, Jan. 28 at 7 p.m. in the fire house.
Margaret Bryan spent Monday, Jan. 11, with her granddaughter, Emma Bryan, celebrating Emma’s seventh birthday which was on Jan. 12. Shopping was first and then on to Jordan Creek to see the movie “The Princess and the Frog”. Then they had lunch at the food court. Later Emma’s mom and dad, Amanda & Andy Bryan, of Waukee took Emma and four of her friends to the Pizza Ranch for a party.
