Our weather turned on us, didn’t it? It was a bit of a surprise to wake up to a snow covered ground on Saturday morning. The temperatures dropped to about 27 degrees on Saturday and Sunday. It warmed up to 34 degrees on Monday morning and gave us a little shower.


Remember to set those recycles out on the curb on Oct. 17.


How does a “Mom’s Night Out” sound for you? You are invited to join the group of Mothers at the New Virginia United Methodist Church on Oct. 23 at 6:30 p.m. Bring with you finger foods and a game, that you might have, to share with the group. We find four couples celebrating wedding anniversaries this week: Rick and Becky Halvorsen on Oct. 15, Bob and Jean Wickett, Jerry and Cheryl Boles on Oct. 16, Mike and Carrie Hamilton and Craig and Anna Young, Oct. 18.


Jason and Ann Fantz, Abigail and Brianna, were pleased to have his sister, Jonna Fantz of Minneapolis, for a weekend guest. Jason, Ann and Jonna participated in the walk for the ALS cause held in Des Moines on Saturday. They all felt that it was a great success.


Reba Reed attended the retreat for United Methodist secretaries at Camp Wesley Woods this week. She enjoyed visiting with fellow secretaries and learning the many differences in the church offices.


Mildred Slye celebrated her 90th birthday with her family over the weekend. Her daughter Virgene and Brent Dorman of Columbus, Ohio, drove back for the special occasion and her sons Gary, Galen, and Garald all joined her. On Sunday, Garald and Alice and Virgene and Brent all attended church with her.


Congratulations to Elizabeth Smith for her success at the Spelling Bee held at the Covered Bridge Festival in Winterset on Saturday. Elizabeth won 4th place with her word TRIGONOMETRY. Elizabeth is the daughter of Brad and Sarah Smith and a fourth grader at Interstate 35 Elementary.


Get well wishes go to Missy Bechtel as she recovers from a fall from her deck steps at their home early Tuesday morning. Her daughter, Twanice Baker, drove her to the hospital where she was treated for torn muscles in her arm and shoulder.


Merrill and Arleen McCuddin enjoyed an overnight visit from their grandchildren, Jake and Brooklyn McCuddin, on Friday. Their parents Bruce and Maryann celebrated their wedding anniversary with a fun trip to Walnut.


Charles Carson has returned home following a trip by ambulance to the Iowa Methodist Medical Center Tuesday evening. He underwent many test and extra dialysis before he came home,


Marvel Loomis enjoyed her 92nd birthday with many of her family members on Sunday. She was, also, celebrating with her daughter, Jeanette and Robert Hagan as they observed their Golden Wedding anniversary.


A large crowd of friends and relatives attended the Golden Wedding reception to honor Robert and Jeanette Hagan on Saturday, at the New Virginia United Methodist Church. Among the guests and relatives who attended from a distance were: their daughter. Tara Hagan of Reno, Nev., her sister, Sheryl Jurgensen of Merritt Island, Fla., Leslie Jurgensen of Colorado Springs, Colo., David Shane of Linden, Mich., Anita Braddock of West Plains, Mo. and David and Patty Oelberg of Mason City.
