DAR sponsoring essay contest

To the Editor:

The Nancy McKay Harsh Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) is sponsoring an American History essay contest. This year’s topic is “Describe how you felt on May 10, 1896, when the golden spike was driven at Promontory Summit, Utah, to celebrate the completion of the First Transcontinental Railroad.” It is open to students in grades 5,6, 7, and 8. The topic for grades 9-12 contest is “Discuss and analyze Christopher Columbus’ early influences and experiences and how these contributed to successes and failures in his voyages of exploration.”

A $10 cash gift, a medal and a certificate will be awarded to the local winner in each contest. Winning entries will then be sent to the State society. State level winners will be chosen there and forwarded on to the district and national contest.

This is a good learning experience for students. It is open to all students in public and private schools and also to those who are home schooled. The deadline for entries is Dec. 1. For more information and a copy of the rules, please contact Bonnie Riepe at 641-346-2566.

Reader poll

Clarke County Landfill Commission voted to proceed with a transfer station to replace the landfill after it reaches capacity, but Osceola City Council hasn't given its support for the idea. What do you think is the best option for the city of Osceola?
A transfer station would be most convenient, even if it comes at slightly higher costs than direct hauling and keeps the city in the 28E agreement.
If direct hauling to Madison County Landfill or Metro Waste Authority is the cheapest option, it's the best choice despite some inconvenience to those who currently drop off waste at Clarke County Landfill.
Although it could be the most expensive option, Clarke County should build another landfill.
I don't care what the city decides.
